HEIVA I MONTREAL 2017
Te Hura Te Heiva is an experimental event, in many respects. (Tahiti dance online tells you more)
It is the first choreographed solo contest. It is the first Heiva that is produced in Québec, in Canada, and on the North American East coast. It is also the first America Ori Tahiti championship. Last but not least, it is the first Heiva that makes way for both the traditional and modern interpretation of Ori Tahiti. We are moving the Heiva to fall, because of the harsh climate of Montreal’s winters that might discourage foreign dancers from coming.
The America
Ori Tahiti Championship
On September 2015 took place the first “Japan Ori Tahiti Championship”. On November 30th 2015 took place the first “World Championship of Ori Tahiti” in Tahiti.
Te Hura Te Heiva includes the first “America Ori Tahiti Championship”.
To be allowed to participate, applicants must have won, first, second or third place in their category in another Heiva in the USA, Mexico or elsewhere in the world, except Heiva I Tahiti.
Organization of the championship
The performance’s championship is divided in two parts where candidates have a 3-minute presentation on average:
First part – Solo choreography: Candidates receive the music at the time of their registration
Time of the performance: 2:00 min to 2:10 min.
Second part – Solo improvisation: The music is unknown to candidates
Time of the performance: 1:00 min approximatively.
There is a three to five-second-break between the solo choreography and the solo improvisation. The solo choreography is graded separately from the solo improvisation.
The music assigned for the solo choreography will have a part with slow rhythm and a part with fast rhythm. The compositions for the championship allow candidates to showcase as well their dance technique as their expressiveness. For the solo choreography, candidates have the option or not to present a theme, as short as it is. This encourages the expressiveness of the dance. The theme must be presented in French, English or Tahitian .

Solo Competition
Men and Women
Contrary to other solo competition outside Tahiti, Te Hura Te Heiva is a choreographed competition, not a competition of improvisation. The music will be handed to candidates at the time of their registration.
The competition is opened to anyone aged 13 years old onwards (see age categories in the rules). Candidates will have several months to prepare their performance. They can prepare their own choreography or call on a professor or choreographer. The music is imposed. For each competition’s age category, there are three different musics. At the time of the registration, the music is assigned to each candidate and candidates cannot choose their music.

The “Ori Toa” Competition
This category is opened to men and women. Indeed, mentions of women warriors exist in Polynesian culture, so there is no reason for the “Ori Toa” Competition to be solely reserved to men. Time of the performance: from 1:00 min to 1:30 min max. No music is assigned as candidates dance by declaiming a poem or a warrior song, like the Haka. No music is assigned as candidates dance by performing a Haka while declaiming a poem or a warrior song.Of course for Ori To,a competition, music is not imposed
The “Tahitian freestyle” Competition

The Tahitian Freestyle Category is the first of its kind. The fundamental movements required are Tahiri Tamau and Fa’arapu.
